About CalcTool

CalcTool is the answer to all those annoying little calculation jobs that bug you. All you need to do is find the right "calc" for any specific job, fill in the blue input boxes, and get the answer out in the orange output boxes.

The site is based on an idea that came about after years of frustration fiddling with calculators, searching for formulae and conversion factors, and making stupid mistakes. It started as a plan to remove once and for all the multitude of Excel spreadsheets scattered around the hard drive that had been hacked together to perform various simple tasks. And from there it went on to grow and blossom to the point where we decided to actually do something about it.

Put in basic terms, CalcTool is a collection of pages that describe simple everyday calculations, and then do them for you. Each calculation allows you to put the data in (and take it out) with whatever units you choose, so if you know that it took you 5 minutes to climb 30 feet, then CalcTool can tell you how fast you were going in miles per hour. Or even furlongs per fortnight if you prefer. The calculations are categorized by category and subcategory, and you should be able to find what you're looking for easily enough by browsing. If it's not there, then feel free to make a request for its addition.

Calctool is written by a couple of brothers who live quite literally halfway around the world from each other. One of us does most of the design and content, and the other does most of the programming and technical stuff. It's all done in our free time, what little of it there is, so please excuse the hurried prose and try to be understanding if you think that the pace of development is at times slow (we both have families that we like to spend time with once in a while). In the first week we managed to get things operating an a basic way, and in the second week we were able to see how it worked well enough to get a full grip on the feature set and design. The third week consisted of tweaks and an attempt to really start getting some content up, and that takes us to the end of February 2008. By the end of March, we had well over 100 calcs programmed, and pretty much all of the glitches had been fixed for the main 3 browsers (A nasty Javascript bug in Safari was actually fixed by Apple - thanks, Steve).

That's really about all there is to it. If you have something that you want to say to us, then I'd suggest heading on over to the CalcTool forum. And if you stumbled upon us looking for one of the other "CalcTool"s in the world then we can only apologize. Let's face it, it's a pretty obvious name. To be honest, we were pretty gobsmacked to find that the domain was available, and didn't really think it through at the beginning - just had to put the darned thing somewhere!

And just one more thing. Please respect our efforts here and take them in good faith. Link to us rather than attempting to "borrow" our code, and don't try to sue us if you think one of the calculations is acting up (i.e. we offer no assurances of accuracy). Thanks.
