Whether you want to convert dynes to Newtons or Newtons to pound-force, our force converter is the right choice. Using the appropriate units for any calculation is essential, but unit conversions can be tricky. With our force converter, you can forget your worries about the unit conversion and focus on more critical aspects of the calculation.

In the following sections, you can learn about the different units of force available and how the force conversion works. So get some snacks and read on to find out how much a Newton is worth in other units.

If you want to calculate force instead, head to our force calculator, which also has unit conversion features built-in.

The SI unit Newton

Named after the famous Sir Isaac Newton, the unit Newton (N) is the SI unit of force. According to Newton's second law of motion, the force is mass times the acceleration:

F=maF = m\cdot a

where:

  • FF - The force acting on a body;
  • mm - The mass of the body; and
  • aa - The acceleration of the body.

We define a Newton(1 N)(1 \text{ N}) as the amount of force required to accelerate 1 kg1 \text{ kg} mass by 1 m/s21 \text{ m/s}^2.

Other force units

Besides Newton, there are other units to measure force. The following is a list of such predominant units of force:

  1. Dynes - Dyne (dyn) is the unit of force in the centimeter-gram-second (CGS) units system. One dyne is the force required to accelerate a mass of 1 g1 \text{ g} by 1cm/s21 \text{cm/s}^2. The conversion rate from Newtons to dyne is:
1 N=105 dyn1 dyn=105 N\qquad 1 \text{ N} = 10^5\text{ dyn}\\ \qquad 1 \text{ dyn} = 10^{-5} \text{ N}
  1. Kiloponds - Kilopond (kp) is a non-standard unit, part of the gravitational metric system. Often we use the name kilogram-force (kgf) instead of kilopond. It is the force that a mass of 1 kg1 \text{ kg} exerts under the gravitational field on the Earth's surface (gravitational acceleration g = 9.80665 m/s²). To convert kiloponds to Newton or Newtons to kiloponds, remember that:
1 N=0.10197 kp1 kp=9.80665 N\qquad 1 \text{ N} = 0.10197 \text{ kp}\\ \qquad 1 \text{ kp} = 9.80665 \text{ N}
  1. Pound-force - Pound-force (lbf) is an English unit for measuring force. Like kiloponds, it is the force that one pound mass (1 lb)(1 \text{ lb}) exerts under the gravitational field on the Earth's surface. For pound-force to Newton conversion:
1 N=0.2248 lbf1 lbf=4.448 N\qquad 1 \text{ N} = 0.2248 \text{ lbf}\\ \qquad 1 \text{ lbf} = 4.448 \text{ N}
  1. Poundals - Poundal (pdl) is a force unit part of the foot-pound-second (FPS) system. It is the force required to accelerate one pound-mass (1 lb)(1 \text{ lb}) by one foot per second per second (1 ft/s2)(1 \text{ ft/s}^2). The conversion rate from poundal to Newton is:
1 N=7.233 pdl1 pdl=0.13826 N\qquad 1 \text{ N} = 7.233 \text{ pdl}\\ \qquad 1 \text{ pdl} = 0.13826 \text{ N}
  1. Kip - Kip is a US customary unit, so the US and its territories use it. It is equal to a thousand pound-force (1000 lbf)(1000 \text{ lbf}). Engineers use it to express large pound-force values. To convert kips to Newtons, remember that:
1 N=0.0002248 kip1 kip=4448 N\qquad 1 \text{ N} = 0.0002248 \text{ kip}\\ \qquad 1 \text{ kip} = 4448 \text{ N}
