What is sound wavelength?

Sound is a type of energy that travels through the air or any other medium as a vibration of pressure waves. One wavelength is the distance between two compressions or two rarefactions in a sound wave. The wavelength of sound is usually measured in meters.

The wavelength of sound is inversely proportional to the frequency of sound. This means that the higher the frequency, the shorter the wavelength. You can check it with the sound wavelength calculator.

How to calculate wavelength of sound

The sound wavelength formula is straightforward:

λ=vfλ = \frac{v}{f}

where

  • λλ is the wavelength, usually in meters,

  • vv is the speed of sound, in meters per second, and

  • ff is the frequency of sound, in hertz.

You can also easily find out how to calculate the speed of sound with frequency and wavelength from the above equation just by rearranging it. Note that the speed of sound is not a constant but depends on the medium it's traveling through. The most common values used for the speed of sound are:

  • 331 m/s in dry air at 0°C;

  • 343 m/s in water; and

  • 1,484 m/s in iron.
